Fredrik’s work has been recognized in many ways, including several articles in international publications. For example, co-author of a scientific article based on 24,000 workplace drug tests. The study has been published in the scientific journal Drug Testing and Analysis and partly presented in Läkartidningen. He is a member of the expert group from the occupational health sector that, together with researchers at the Karolinska Institutet, developed guidelines to prevent and manage alcohol problems in the workplace. Fredrik is also active in the training of MRO physicians (Medical Review Officers) within the industry organization Sveriges Företagshälsor. Besides this Fredrik is a well-known figure in Swedish media on addiction issues.

Driving the surge in workplace drug testing

Under Sparring’s guidance, Avonova has conducted an increasing number of drug tests in recent years. And he is keen on scaling up proactive screening even more across industries.  “Early detection and preventive measures are vital. Reducing easy access to narcotics and raising awareness of even soft drugs such as cannabis can avert long-term health and safety risks.”

Answering employers’ key questions

Fredrik regularly fields common queries about workplace testing protocols. He clarifies that random drug testing is most prevalent in high-risk sectors such as transport, construction, industry and logistics. And advises that tests should be implemented via jointly agreed policies and stresses the importance of certified laboratories.

Advocating preventive, supportive practices

Beyond testing Fredrik calls for new regulations to bolster employers’ rehabilitation efforts and eliminate the stigma surrounding drug use, particularly among young workers who may face early intervention opportunities. His vision extends to integrating clinical expertise with digital tools and personalized follow-up, ensuring that organizations not only detect issues early but also offer effective support pathways.

“By scaling rigorous testing, offering expert guidance and advocating preventive strategies, we help companies transform drug-related challenges into opportunities for stronger, more resilient workforces.” ends Fredrik Sparring.
